Saturday Art School project where students create self portraits using collage materials and painted patterns.
To start a 10-week course on portraits, students created a self-portrait using collage materials and mixed media drawing materials. As a class, we discussed artists such as Deborah Roberts, Mickalene Thomas, and Lorna Simpson. All of these artists create portraits of people whom which they are celebrating the characteristics that make them who they are. Students were asked to write down some words that describe themselves. Then, in their collage, they were challenged to show at least one of those words. In addition to creating work that utilized their description words, students incorporated a pattern that they had created the week before. They could also incorporate other premade patterns that were provided. Over two lessons, students created their self-portraits that incorporated their personal characteristics using a variety of collage materials.
