Danielle White - Artist and Educator

Jersey City based painter and confused millennial.

The past few years have been an exploration of my artistic choices stemming from feminism, body image, and vulnerability.  Negative thoughts placed upon women about their bodies create anxiety within many women.  Is it right that every day when women look in the mirror, they have to not only think about how they feel about themselves but also about how they think others will react to how they look? How can women be expected to constantly seek the gratification from themselves and also the gratification from others? If one changes their appearance to follow societal expectations, is that a true measure of one’s sense of worth?

Resume

In my work, I embrace these questions with the figure.  Currently, I am largely concerned about when a work is finished.  I feel as though pieces that look incomplete can get a lot of scrutiny.  Artwork can be thought of as a way to expose the artist’s raw feelings and emotions through an image.  This parallels with how we feel as humans.  People deal with the parallels of what society expects from them and what society expects of artwork.  Therefore, I paint women and men, who both face anxiety about pressures put upon them by our society.  I paint women and men who are embracing themselves for who they are in an unapologetic manner.
